Julian embarks on a desperate mission to find Leo, his "golden pulse," who has been captured by the malevolent vampire Alistair. Leo is being used to resurrect Valcara, an ancient entity. Julian discovers Paul possesses "silver blood," a counter-force to Leo's golden essence, and is involved with "The Wild Boys," a morally ambiguous faction led by his calculating father, Eric. Paul's unsettling awakening and cryptic allegiance force Julian into an uneasy alliance with Eric. The story culminates in a daring infiltration of Alistair's fortress.
